Косвенная речь — это пересказ чужих слов без кавычек. В английском при этом происходит три изменения сразу: сдвигается время, меняются местоимения и меняются слова времени и места.
Сдвиг времён
Работает, когда вводящий глагол стоит в прошедшем: he said, she told, they asked.

Местоимения — по смыслу: “I like your bag,” she said → She said that she liked my bag.

Когда сдвиг НЕ нужен
- Вводящий глагол в настоящем: He says that he is tired.
- Речь о постоянном факте: The teacher said that water boils at 100 degrees.
- Пересказ сразу после слов, когда ситуация не изменилась.
Вопросы в косвенной речи
Главное изменение — прямой порядок слов и отсутствие вопросительного знака.

Заметьте: в косвенном вопросе исчезают вспомогательные do и does — они были нужны только для вопросительного порядка слов.
Просьбы и приказы
Переводятся через инфинитив с частицей to:
- “Close the door,” he said → He told me to close the door.
- “Please help me,” she said → She asked me to help her.
- Отрицание: “Don’t be late” → He told me not to be late.
Глаголы, которыми вводят речь
say, tell, ask, answer, explain, add, promise, warn, suggest.
Разница между say и tell: tell требует указания собеседника (he told me), say — нет (he said). Ошибка he said me — одна из самых частых.
